Introduction
------------
YRWAY is designed to aid the student in studying for tests. It is
designed to be fully configurable for the student with the ability to add
or delete their own subjects and answers in the language of their choice.
I consider it useful to all students as it provides a fully configurable
program that allows the student to match it with their needs. With the
ability to change the subjects it can be tailored to meet any age group
and then can GROW with the students abilities.
This program is a variation of my "TEACHER" works, except it allows the
user to use it with ANY subject and in most languages. It primarily is a
shell type program that lets you make it fit your needs.
What is Shareware?
------------------
Shareware is a form of distribution which gives users a chance to try
software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
to use it, you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on
details -- some request registration while others require it, some
specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything
from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated
program with printed manual.
Pg. 1
Registration
------------
If you find YRWAY useful and you continue to use it after a reasonable
(30 days) trial period, you are required to make a registration payment
of $15.00 to Larry Edwards. See "REGIS.TXT" for more information.
The $15.00 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time.
You must treat a registered version of this software just like a book.
Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time,
this software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved
from one computer location to another, as long as there is no possibility
of it being used in two different locations at the same time.
Commercial users of YRWAY must register and pay for their copies of the
program within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn. For
site-license information, contact the author direct.
You are encouraged to pass (unregistered) copies of YRWAY along
to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users will
receive a copy of the latest version of YRWAY they register.
Though the program is not "crippled" in anyway, this shareware version
shows an "Unregistered " status message in the Main Menu Screen on
start up to encourage you to register the program.
Please fill out the included registration order form (file REGIS.TXT)
and send in your registration today. You can send REGIS.TXT to your
printer by typing:
"COPY REGIS.TXT PRN" (without the quotes)
and then pressing ENTER while at the MS-DOS prompt.
What Do I Get for Registering, and Why Should I?
------------------------------------------------
Here are some reasons why you should register:
o Once registration is received you will have instant access to the
author's BBS to download YOUR "KEY" and the latest version that
your "KEY" will work with.
o You receive a CURRENT copy of the program, and a "KEY" program that
will "stamp" your reg. number on future versions, by U.S. Mail.
o You get a LIFETIME license, meaning you're entitled to all future
versions/upgrades of YRWAY. You may get the latest version thru my
BBS, or by returning your original disk to the author.
o You get unlimited technical support via surface mail or electronic
mail.
o You have the author's ear when it comes to suggesting new features
and capabilities.
o You help increase competition in the software industry by keeping
prices low (shareware doesn't rely on expensive advertising).
o Finally, you can be proud of the honesty and integrity you've shown
in registering the program and having participated in the Shareware
revolution.
Pg. 2
Installation and Operation
--------------------------
Upgrading from a prior version
------------------------------
This version of YRWAY will work with your old .Dat files. If you wish
to use them copy them to a safe area, then once you have run the new
configuration program copy them back into the directory you are using
for YRWAY. The new configuration program will write new .DAT files, if
prompted if you want to overwrite them answer YES. The old YRWAY.CFG
file is NOT compatible with this version so can not be used and should be
deleted. From the DOS prompt type "DEL YRWAY.CFG" without the quotes. If
you are using your old .DAT files be sure to name the "TOPIC" areas, in
the new configuration program, the same as they are in your old version.
Copy all other files over the old ones.
Configuring for first time use
------------------------------
To begin I suggest you create a directory on your hard drive, such as
C:\YRWAY. Then copy all the files into this directory.
Before you can use YRWAY you must first tell it how to look. This program
was designed to be flexible for use with most languages and can be edited
to reflect different looks for different languages. You MUST run the new
"YRCFG.EXE" program, type YRCFG then press <ENTER>. Once the program
starts you will have the option to continue or stop if you want to make
a change before starting the full configuration. If you elect to continue
you will see a screen like below.
.............................................................................
╔═ Mon Feb 10 1992 ═══════════════════════════════════════════ 03:46:32 pm ═╗
║ ╒═════════════════════════════ YRWAY 2.2 ══════════════════════════════╕ ║
║ │ TOPIC1 TOPIC2 TOPIC3 TOPIC4 TOPIC5 TOPIC6 EDIT QUIT │ ║
║ ╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛ ║
^^^^^^
Please enter the name of the FIRST Topic of Study.
Maximum of 6 letters.
This Topic will be placed as indicated above on the MAIN MENU.
.............................................................................
This screen represents the top section of the MAIN Menu. Enter whatever
name you want the first "TOPIC" of study to be. It MUST be 6 letters or
less with no characters like "," or ".". LETTERS OR NUMERALS ONLY. Once
you have entered YOUR TOPIC hit <ENTER> and it will change TOPIC1 to what
you entered. It will also create an EMPTY .Dat file for later editing with
your questions and answers.
Once the first TOPIC has been named your next 5 screens will look the same
with the exception of YOUR Topics name will appear and the indicators(^^^^)
will move over so you know what you are naming. You will have a TOTAL of
6 TOPIC areas to use. If you do not want to use all of them, when prompted
for a name hit <ENTER> and they will be named "BLANK2", "BLANK3" etc. You
can always change these later by running the configuration program again.
Pg. 3
Once all the "TOPICS" have been named the screen will look like below:
╔═ Mon Feb 10 1992 ═══════════════════════════════════════════ 03:46:32 pm ═╗
║ ╒═════════════════════════════ YRWAY 2.2 ══════════════════════════════╕ ║
║ │ TOPIC1 TOPIC2 TOPIC3 TOPIC4 TOPIC5 TOPIC6 EDIT QUIT │ ║
║ ╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛ ║
^^^^^^
At this screen and the next one you will have the option of changing the
"EDIT" and "QUIT" commands to whatever you want them to read, as long as
they MEAN THE SAME in your language. These areas may not be used for a new
"TOPIC" as they are designed to do a particular duty. If you wish them to
stay the same simply hit <ENTER> and they will not be changed.
This completes the MAIN MENU set up and YOUR names will now replace all of
the above commands on the Main Menu.
Now the screen will be changed to look like below.
.............................................................................
The following is an example of the QUESTION SCREEN showing placement of
the prompts you will be asked to change.

.............................................................................
This screen is displayed when an incorrect answer is picked from the
Question screen. Here you can change the prompts "WRONG", "You Typed: "
and "Press <ENTER> to try again" to what they would mean in YOUR language.
After completing these screens you will have the chance to change 2 more
prompts that are used within the program.
All of your inputs are kept in a file called "YRWAY.CFG" and these may be
changed at any time by using the YRCFG program. BE WARNED if you change a
TOPIC NAME the old .DAT file will be deleted and a new one created for the
new TOPIC. This completes the configuration program.
IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS DELETE THE "YRWAY.CFG" FILE and start again.
Adding to the External Data Files
--------------------------------
Before you can use the program at least 1 database must be edited, you
will not be allowed access to a database until it has been edited first.
You can add your own information to the external database in two ways.
You can use a text editor or word processor to create and maintain the
database, or you can use the editor built into the program. If you
use the built in Editor function (by selecting EDIT at the MAIN MENU) you
will see a screen that asks you which database to edit. Select the one you
want and you will see a screen like on the next page.
